ONS variant household projections for England

ONS variant household projections for England

May 16, 2019

Commenting, Lord Green of Deddington, Chairman of Migration Watch UK, said:

These projections confirm what we have been saying for some time. Namely, that if the current high level of net migration to England continues, we will need to build a home every six minutes, night and day, just to cope with the added demand for housing resulting from immigration.

With so many young people negatively impacted by the housing crisis, it's no wonder that a majority of 18-24 year olds support the government's pledge to reduce the level of net migration significantly. Given the current deep disillusion with politicians, the government need to start taking real action to ensure that their immigration promises are delivered soon.

Note to editors

  • These ONS variant household projections include what the ONS call a 'high migration variant'. This is based upon long-term net migration to England of 215,000 per year (compared with net migration to England of 152,000 in their principal projection).
  • The level of international long-term net migration to England has averaged 246,000 per year over the past five years and 213,000 per year over the past ten years.
  • According to a 2018 Deltapoll (commissioned by Channel 4 News), 55% of 18-24 year olds surveyed agreed with the government's target of reducing net migration levels to the 'tens of thousands' per year.
