Response to 2001 Census figures…
February 13, 2003
The following comment was issued to the media on February 13, 2003
in respect of the results of the 2001 Census.
'These figures illustrate just how quickly and profoundly the character
of some parts of our cities is changing. Indeed the changes will accelerate
as the current record levels of immigration work through.
As a nation it is important we are comfortable with the pace and nature
of fundamental changes to our society. Our recent MORI Poll revealed
that 57% of our population are concerned that Britain is losing its
own culture. The census figures should stimulate an open and honest
debate about this highly sensitive issue. We can no longer pretend
that it is not happening...'
