Migration Watch UK Press Comment on Student Migration

February 24, 2015

There is no case for the post study work visa to be reinstated, that is the conclusion of a report on the route which was closed by the government, issued today by Migration Watch UK.

The report finds that an unlimited number of genuine international students can stay on and work in the UK so long as they find graduate level work paying a minimum of £20,500. This means that the UK’s post study work offer is much more generous than the UK’s major international competitor, the United States.

The report finds that non-EEA applications for University study have increased by 17% since 2010 due to the excellent reputation that UK universities have around the world.

Commenting, Alp Mehmet, Vice Chairman of Migration Watch UK said:

“The UK is one of the most attractive countries to study: our Universities rank among the very best in the world and those that want to stay on and work can do so. There is no need to create further confusion by introducing new routes just as the system is settling down and the number of non-EU students continues to go up.”
