EU citizens could continue to move freely to Britain for years after Brexit, the prime minister indicated yesterday.

Theresa May refused to rule out EU migrants retaining the right to move to Britain during a transitional period after the UK left the bloc.

Asked if free movement would end when Britain officially left the EU on March 29, 2019, at the end of the two-year Article 50 process, Mrs May said that “a period of time when businesses and government are adjusting to systems” could be necessary.

The government white paper on Brexit that was published in February indicated that Britain intended to deploy an “implementation phase” that would bridge the gap between the country leaving the union and a new permanent UK-EU trade deal
