Migrants who made dangerous crossings from northern France to come to Britain were removed today in the first of what ministers hope will become a regular practice for those who have arrived in recent months.

A special charter flight took 14 migrants to France and Germany after the Home Office found that they had already claimed asylum in one of the two EU states in the past.

The Home Office had planned to remove a total of 20 migrants but last-minute interventions prevented six boarding the flight.

All the migrants on board had been discovered to have claimed asylum in either France or Germany when their fingerprints were taken and then checked against EU databases.
