Judges would be barred from granting injunctions to stop the removal of illegal migrants from the UK under proposals being considered by ministers to toughen up the Illegal Migration Bill.

Up to 50 Conservative MPs are expected to back an amendment aimed at preventing a legal tactic that experts say could be used to block deportation.

The Times has been told that at least two frontbenchers have discussed resigning from the government if Rishi Sunak refuses to back the move by Monday, when the bill returns for a series of votes in the Commons.

However, the government also faces challenges from other Conservative MPs to soften the bill. A number of Tory former ministers have backed amendments to remove unaccompanied child migrants from its remit,
