The family of an Iraqi asylum seeker who died of suspected diphtheria after being held at Manston asylum centre have described treatment there as “negligent” and are asking the government when his body will be handed over.

Hussein Haseeb, 31, became the first asylum seeker to die last month after being detained at the Kent facility, where charities have described inhumane conditions. Abdullah Hussein Ahmed, a cousin of Haseeb, said: “The people with Hussein in the centre told us it was negligent, to the max.”

Haseeb was taken to hospital on arrival in the UK on November 12 but was discharged and taken to Manston. Days later the young father was readmitted to hospital, where he died on November 19.
