The Minister of State for Business, Energy and Clean Growth was being quizzed on the plans to send asylum seekers to Rwanda.

Adil, 47, and co-host Kate Garraway spoke to the MP as he joined them via live video link from outside Westminster on Monday.

Having quizzed him about PM Boris Johnson's Partygate scandal, chat quickly turned to the Government's latest deportation plans.

It was announced last week that asylum seekers who unofficially cross the English Channel in small boats will be sent to Rwanda, East Africa.

More than 160 charities and campaign groups have asked the Government to scrap the "shamefully cruel" plans.

Asking Mr Hands about his thoughts on the scheme, Adil asked: "Here we are celebrating Easter this weekend, the life and times of Jesus Christ who himself was a refugee.

"Under this scheme, Priti Patel, Boris Johnson, your Government's scheme, if he arrived from the UK, Jesus would be sent to Rwanda."

"Is that right?" he tried to clarify, before following up with the baffling question: "Would you send Jesus to Rwanda?"

Laughing as he tried to respond, Mr Hands replied: "I think we could debate the Easter story. This is a Government policy, 2,000 years later..."

He was cut off by Adil, who spoke over him: I'm asking you... you're not answering the question, sorry. Mr Hands, you've not answered the question."

Mr Hands concluded: "I'm sorry, I think it's a ludicrous question."

Good Morning Britain viewers headed to social media to have their say, slamming Adil's line of questioning as "stupid".

"Would you send Jesus to Rwanda? What a stupid question?" one said, as a second agreed: "I wasn't expecting to hear this."

"'Would you have sent Jesus to Rwanda?', ridiculous questioning on GMB today," a third scathed.

"Adil Ray saying that if Jesus was alive he would have been sent to Rwanda is a bloody awful comparison," a fourth added. "Where does this moron get his stupid comments from?"
