Over 1,000 migrants land on British shores in first three weeks of the year
OVER 1,000 migrants have already landed on British shores in the first three weeks of the year.
Another 100 refugees crossed the Channel on Sunday on small boats as the total for 2022 ticked over the landmark figure already.
In 2021 just 223 made the perilous journey in the same month - with over 28,000 crossing in total.
And in 2020, the landmark 1,000 figure wasn't hit until May 3 - when 49 arrived in three boats - taking the figure for the year to 1,045.
The Home Office confirmed yesterday that they rescued or intercepted 87 people making the perilous journey in three boats on Sunday - bringing the total to 1,057.
Home office minister Tom Pursglove said: “People fleeing persecution should seek safety in the first safe country they reach and not risk their lives paying criminal gangs to cross the Channel.”
