Britain has offered to send police officers to France to help patrol its beaches as the number of migrants to cross the English Channel this year hit three times the total for 2020.

France is said to have rejected the offer amid concerns that it represents a breach of its sovereignty.

The Home Office confirmed that nearly 900 people crossed the Channel in small boats on Saturday, bringing the total this year to 25,565.

The numbers coming to the UK for the first three days of this week are also expected to be in the “high hundreds” because waters remain calm.

Yesterday Tory MPs publicly warned Priti Patel, the home secretary, that the failure to stop migrants from coming to the UK risked undermining Brexit.
