We must house a town’s worth of refugees, says Boris Johnson

Enough housing to accommodate a whole new town must be found for Afghan refugees arriving in Britain, Boris Johnson said yesterday as the government turned its attention to the integration of those fleeing the Taliban.

The prime minister said that the “overwhelming majority” of interpreters who worked with British troops had been airlifted out of Kabul as the last evacuation flights were preparing to leave Afghanistan.

Across Europe, leaders are braced for an influx of refugees. The desperate scenes at Kabul airport represent only a fraction of the refugee crisis that had been unfolding long before Taliban fighters swept into the city. More than a million people have been displaced by the fighting in Afghanistan, and thousands are fleeing every week.
